cf700a30f62287ca72ceb1211de418e6c3e5ed78-thumb October 31st has arrived in rural Maryland. It’s cool and clear with a bright blue October sky contrasting with the remaining orange and gold leaves on the trees in our woods. There are a few roses left on the briars and a hardy marigold still blooms. But mostly, the yard and woods are folding into the bare-branch, dead-looking garden days of late autumn.

Halloween, the time of trick-or-treating, costumes, and a thinning of the barriers between the living and the dead, is upon us. I will, per usual, hand out goodies to fairies, pirates, stormtroopers, wizards, and small witches. Luckily, one of my paintings was used on the October 2016 issue of Spaceports & Spidersilk and a hauntingly good Halloween story was published in the most recent issue of Unoriginal – A Science Fiction & Horror Magazine.

For those who’d like to visit spooky places, here’s a link to Haunted Places in Maryland. I’ve visited many of these locations, and felt appropriately “creeped out” – though a photographable ghost never manifested itself within camera range. Living so close to the Pennsylvania line, I’ve also visited a number of the locations which made it onto the Haunted Places in Pennsylvania list.

Spaceports and Spidersilk 10-14 But sometimes, the scariest experiences aren’t at famous locations, but happen in unplanned moments at random places. I can remember a long-ago attempt to scare others in which I hid in a cemetery that turned out to be quite frightening for me!

So whether you’re a fan of candy corn, haunted houses, ghostly encounters, or watching scary movies – have a Happy Halloween! (And enjoy last year’s cover of Spaceports & Spidersilk featuring one of my paintings with a few trick-or-treating dwarves).

illumen fall 2013 Thanks goes out to the editors of Alban Lake Publishing’s Illumen speculative poetry magazine and Frost Fire Worlds magazine, and Nomadic Delirium Press’s Spaceports and Spidersilk speculative e-magazine. My paintings are used for the covers of the current issues of all 3 magazines!

“Flying Fish” is the title of the mixed water media painting on the front of the Fall 2013 Illumen. Though I must admit I was surprised when I first saw the cover. The editor decided to reverse the right-hand side of the painting and use it for the cover image! After looking at the cover again, sigh, I knew the flip-flopping of the illustration made sense.

Frost Fire Worlds 11-13 “Fafnir at Raven’s Haunt” is the title of the mixed media painting on the front of the November 2013 issue of Frost Fire Worlds. It’s one of my favorite paintings (yes, illustrators have favorites). And by mixed water media, I mean I used watercolor, inks, watercolor colored pencils, and acrylic paints in creating the art.

spaceportsoct2013-DTF-200x300 “Big-eyed Beastie” is the title of the mixed media painting used for the cover of the October 2013 Spaceports and Spidersilk. I wanted to used fall and Halloweenish colors without using the typical pumpkins, black cats, and witches. I think my creature captures the season.

calendar2014crist1 If you love my speculative illustrations, you can always order a copy of the Alban Lake Publishing 2014 Calendar featuring lots of fun science fiction and fantasy related dates and my fantastical illustrations.

In the calendar, you can finally see the full painting from which a tiny square was taken for the cover of an issue of Scifaikuestscifaikuest feb. 2012 And the full-sized, non-reversed painting, “Rock Castle,” used as the cover of an issue of Aoife’s Kiss, is also included. Plus paintings never published before are included in the calendar.

Aoife's Kiss, Sept-2011 Cover If you’d like to see more of my artwork, I’m Artist Guest of Honor at this year’s Darkover Con in Timonium, Maryland. I’m hoping to display (and maybe sell) a dozen paintings, plus sell posters featuring some of my art. And of course, I’ll have my books there to sell, including my YA adventure fantasy, The Enchanted Skean.

Skean copy Have a most magical weekend, dear readers. Now, back to the drawing board!

Jet-lag still persists, but I’m trying to catch up on all my writing and art responsibilities.

dogs of war dtf On the writing front, Defending the Future – Dogs of War, an anthology of military science fiction stories from editor Mike McPhail and Dark Quest Books is now available. The book includes my story, “Tower Farm,” and I can’t wait to read all the other stories in the collection.

Also, my dark fantasy story, “Black Bear,” was accepted for an upcoming issue of Morpheus Tales. Again, I can’t wait to read everyone else’s contribution. (I already know what mine says!) And my poem, “The wolf is kept fed by his feet,” was just published by Elektrik Milkbath Press’s Paper Crow (Summer/Spring 2013 issue). As usual, a nice editing job by Angela Craig.

In addition, I’m one of the authors participating in “Just Write Writers Conference” on Sunday, Sept. 29th at the Bel Air Library in Bel Air, MD. It looks to be a great day filled with writing information and visits with readers and fellow writers.

calendar2014crist1 On the art front, a 2014 calendar featuring my speculative paintings was just released by Alban Lake Publishing . And I’ve had fantastical cover art accepted by FrostFire magazine (2), Illumen, and Spaceports and Spidersilk magazine (2).

Plus, 24 of my speculative paintings are currently displayed in “Enchanted – Fantasy Paintings by Vonnie Winslow Crist” at the Lenrow Gallery, Athenaeum Building, Goucher College, Towson, MD. The exhibit will be open to the public until late October 2013.

And as soon as I upload some of my pictures, I’ll share some of the fabulous castles, abbeys, etc. I visited while in Scotland.
