Leo Tolstoy Two masterpieces by Russian author, Leo Tolstoy, challenge all writers to write better: War and Peace and Anna Karenina. As for quotes, from the many, I chose: “In the name of God, stop a moment, cease your work, look around you.”

Whether you interpret this quote to mean “stop and smell the roses” or something different, I think it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and take notice of the people in your day-to-day life. Maybe it’s the ax murderer creeping up unnoticed or the butterflies pooling at your feet or the child next-door that doesn’t have enough to eat – in any of these cases, paying attention to what’s around you is essential.
